Advancing Resilient Systems and Sustainable Community Innovation

The Resilient Communities Research Community (RC2) seeks to position Kennesaw State University as a national leader in developing and implementing innovative technologies and management strategies that enhance the efficiency, resilience, and sustainability of large-scale systems. Aligned with national interests and security priorities, the community’s research spans from infrastructures and urban systems to land management and resource allocation across the United States.

Our members include faculty and staff, along with local stakeholders and private partners, bringing expertise that spans disciplines from engineering and science to the arts and zoogeography.

KSU project aims to change minds on native plants

With ecology as common ground, Mario Bretfeld, Michael Blackwell, and Eric Duncan have taken on a bit of a marketing project. They want people to love weeds.

Using scientific acumen, the trio want people to reconsider certain plants as beneficial to the environment, thanks to a project housed at Kennesaw State University’s Field Station. There, the Safeguarding, Education, Propagation, and Applied Research Laboratory (SEPAL) project safeguards endangered plants and grows highly important native plants that help ecosystems thrive — the latter rarely get planted in home and business landscapes because of commonly available, non-native alternatives.
