Here are four of my favourite videos which emerged between 2012 and 2019 which I share with participants of a coastal cleanup and in lectures about marine litter. They are all very short (2 – 4 mins), informative, motivating and convey ideas in interesting ways.
Many Organisers can only meet participants on the cleanup day itself. By sharing videos in the weeks and day leading up to a cleanup, it can promote conversations and anticipation. If run as a campaign. e.g. supplemented with posters at the work place, quizzes, leaderboards and prizes in their daily space, it can nudge upstream action beyond the single day of action for the oceans. These are motivating and could trigger conversations which could be nudged into upstream action after a cleanup.
1. Two minutes on Oceans with Jim Toomey: Marine Litter (2:13). This was produced in partnership with UNEP and published in September 2012. It is such a treasure as it is very well scripted, concisely covering almost everything you’d want participants to learn about. And yes, it is Jim who draws the beloved Sherman’s Lagoon cartoon strip! There is more, including What is Marine Debris? (1:54). The rest of the Cartoon Crash Course is available at Pew.
2. The Midway trailer by Chris Jordan (3:48). This moving trailer was revealed in 2012 for Chris’ feature film, Albatross, previous called Midway. Prior to this, his heart-wrenching images which reveal the plastic-filled innards of the north Pacific’s Laysan Albatross chicks on Midway Island. the trailer was unveiled in 2012and its empathetic, poetic lens lent feelings no words alone could capture. Very powerful when shared in a large venue.
3. The Last Straw by Von Wong – ft. Steve Connell and The #Strawpocalypse (2:27). This is a vivid narrative about tackling plastic pollution by taking a first step. It overlays the creation of an installation art work, The Parting of the Plastic Sea” by Von Wong in collaboration with Zero Waste Saigon in 2019. There are powerful images to inspire action, one step at a time.
4. Keep Our Waterways Clean (2:00). The National Environment Agency produced this short video on littering in waterways, as part of the Keep Singapore Clean publicity drive in 2013. Various volunteers and organisers contributed to the video which shares a calm but determined message from users of the waterways in Singapore.
If you have other inspiring video suggestions, do let me know; thanks!
