What is a Peer Counselor?

Peer counselors are comprised of undergraduate KSU students that provide an active listening space that promotes empathy and connection for the KSU community. The peer counselors have been trained in an array of areas pertaining to student support, resources, and emotional wellbeing. Peer counselors are here to assist you in navigating your student experience.
What training have they received?

Mental Health First Aid, Kognito, QPR, Safe Space, Naloxone and Recovery Ally, Bystander Intervention, Inclusive Awareness, Mental Health 101 and NASPA Peer Education Certifications.
How can I schedule an appointment with a Peer Counselor?

The schedules of availability for the peer counselors will be listed in the Navigate System. Please follow the prompts to schedule your appointment today. In person appointments are in the Well-Nest (room 261) located on the 2nd floor of the Kennesaw campus Student Center.
Are the appointments in person?

Virtual and in person appointments are available.
How long are the appointments?

50 minutes
How can they help?

Peer counselors provide support by providing you with resources on campus, academic support, stress management, time management, navigating and adjusting to college, and making meaningful social connections.
Is it Confidential?

Yes. An exception to this would be if you are an imminent risk to yourself or others. The Peer Counselors work under the Counseling Center at KSU and adhere to safety policies and procedures of students.

Disclaimer: In the event it is determined that the peer counseling services is not the best treatment option, you will be referred to the Peer Counseling Coordinator and/or a licensed professional to determine the best plan for you moving forward.

Hello, my name is Levi and I am a psychology student at KSU. I have a strong passion for mental health and am happy to talk to you. In my free time, I enjoy music, gaming, and spending time with my friends. I understand the struggles associated with social anxiety, relationships, loneliness, and depression. By providing a safe space of listening, empathy, and support, I aim to help students manage the common stressors of college and link them to appropriate resources.

My name is Sierra, and I am a senior majoring in Psychology. I love to read and watch movies, particularly romance and psychological suspense. As a peer counselor, I am interested in stress management, relationships, and academic support. I am excited to be a part of creating a safe space where individuals can be heard and feel comfortable expressing their feelings freely, without judgment.

My name is Kelly, and I’m thrilled to be serving as a Peer Counselor at KSU. I am in my 3rd year at KSU as a Psychology major. One of my favorite hobbies is cooking, it's something I find both calming and therapeutic after a busy day of responsibilities.

In this role, my goal is to meet you where you are, no matter what you need. I am here to offer support through active listening, student resources, and a focus on emotional well-being. I’m also here to help you navigate your student experience and make the most of your time at KSU.

Hello Owls! My name is Mirlyn Salcedo Maldonado, and I am a third-year student majoring in Psychology. Some interesting facts about me include the following: I was born on the beautiful Island known as Dominican Republic, I enjoy baking, spending time outdoors and I am a native Spanish speaker. As a peer counselor, I am most excited about lending an ear to others and connecting them to the amazing community we are part of. As a student I can relate to managing stress, struggling with self-esteem/confidence, and becoming an independent adult. I am open to hear and learn more about the different issues others are facing and provide support.
