Review of My Assessment Experience with WeRoad
I would like to share my detailed experience of the WeRoad evaluation process, in the hope that it will be useful both for future applicants and for the company to reflect on its practices.
1. Recruitment Expectations
During the initial phone interview, I was explicitly told that if I passed that stage, I would be recruited. The bootcamp was described as a mere formality, intended mainly for onboarding and training. Unfortunately, this did not match my experience: despite passing the phone interview, I was rejected after the bootcamp without receiving clear or actionable feedback. This inconsistency created confusion and disappointment, as the expectations communicated upfront were not aligned with the actual process.
2. Bootcamp Logistics
The bootcamp took place over two days and cost €160, during which we stayed in a youth hostel. Participants shared rooms with up to 8 people. In my case, despite having specified my gender as male at registration, I was initially placed in a female-only room. While the other participants were open and understanding about it, one of the senior coordinators from Italy insisted on finding a solution. She asked me to wait at the reception for 10 minutes while she looked for an alternative in a male dorm. Unfortunately, she never came back nor did she send me any update. As a result, I spent a long time waiting in the noisy common area instead of resting after a tiring day. This led me to feel unwell, and if it hadn’t been for one participant not showing up, I would not have had a bed that night. This basic level of disorganization was surprising for a professional recruitment process.
3. Assessment Quality
Throughout the bootcamp, many of the exercises evaluated were group tasks (meals, city navigation, role-playing, etc.). While that is understandable, there was no real evaluation of participants’ English level, communication skills in one-on-one scenarios, or how someone would truly manage a group while traveling. Considering English is essential for the role, I found this omission surprising.
4. Treatment and Interaction
On the second day, during the last group lunch, by coincidence I sat next to our coordinator. He was friendly and engaging with almost everyone at the table, yet he made a visible effort to avoid interacting with me, except for a short moment when he asked me about the food and condiments in the Lebanese restaurant we were in. As I speak Arabic fluently and know the region and its cuisine well, it felt like his only interest in me was transactional rather than genuine interaction. This selective engagement left me with a negative impression of the process.
5. Feedback
After the bootcamp, the feedback I received was vague and general. When I tried to ask for more specific examples, I never got a reply. This lack of transparency makes it difficult for any candidate to reflect, improve, and eventually apply again.
6. Tip for future applicants.
During the bootcamp, one of the coordinators mentioned that France is the weakest market among all European countries for WeRoad. For polyglot candidates, applying in a different country—such as Germany—might be a better strategy to improve chances of selection. Personally, as someone fluent in French, German, English, and Arabic, if given another opportunity, I would target the German market instead for my application.
Conclusion
Overall, I felt that the recruitment process was inconsistent, poorly organized at times, and not aligned with the promises made during the phone interview. The logistical issues, lack of clear communication, and limited quality of feedback made the experience frustrating, especially considering the time, effort, and cost involved.
I truly believe in the mission of creating meaningful travel experiences and building communities on the road, which is why I invested in this process. However, I strongly encourage WeRoad to review how they handle recruitment bootcamps:
Be transparent about the actual purpose of the bootcamp (selection vs. onboarding).
Ensure basic accommodation logistics are handled properly.
Provide honest, specific, and actionable feedback.
Foster genuine human interactions rather than selective or transactional ones.
If these aspects were improved, the recruitment experience could match the inspiring brand image that WeRoad promotes.
