Teaching, learning, and research at a high level on the campus in the city centre and at the Schlosspark

The KIT-Department BGU takes a holistic approach to understanding, protecting, using, and sustainably shaping the environment as the basis of our lives in teaching, research, and innovations.

In this context, the geosciences and environmental sciences work closely together with the civil engineering sciences. Thus, the department makes an essential contribution to living in an attractive environment also in the future.

Invitation to the Steel Construction Forum 2026

The lecture program offers compact insights into current research results at KIT as well as new regulations such as the Easycode. Other focal points are the fire protection of steel-wood mixed constructions and practical experience with photovoltaic systems in a building inspection context. The program will be supplemented by an update on the current building law situation and an inspiring lecture on engineering structures as a contribution to building culture.

In accordance with the training regulations of the Baden-Württemberg Chamber of Engineers, 4 points will be recognized for participation.

Fungi as a building material - KIT tests new materials

Building with mushrooms to combat the climate crisis. The construction industry is responsible for around 40% of global CO₂ emissions - sustainable building materials are therefore key in the fight against the climate crisis. This is precisely where the new collaborative research center "MYCO BUILD" with the participation of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology comes in: Researchers are developing new types of mushroom-based building materials.

A central sub-project comes from the Institute of Concrete Structures and Building Materials (IMB) at KIT, where the focus is on the physical properties of the mushroom materials - including thermal, acoustic and fire protection. The aim is to understand the behavior of the materials under real conditions and to qualify them for use in construction practice in the long term.
