Go to the official site instead if you want to pay $100 less and reserve seats online

I purchased passes for my family and realized when I received the invoice that this company is based in Spain. This is not the official JR pass site, which allows you to reserve seats online. Within 16 minutes of my online purchase, I requested a refund. They charged a nonrefundable handling fee of $85.46, which I figured I wouldn't get back, but they only refunded 85% of the total amount charged, because I didn't purchase the trip cancellation insurance. 16 minutes after my purchase and they decided to keep 15% of the total amount charged.

READ THE FINE PRINT

This is not the real Japan Rail website, they are a Barcelona-based reseller. This means you can not reserve specific train tickets in advance (except for a limited few in the north). On the actual official website (japanrailpass.net) you can reserve any ticket on any train. Additionally, because jrailpass is this kind of semi-skeevy setup they decide how things will go, pretty much unregulated. So if, as we had happen, you have to cancel your trip (a family member suddenly died), you can expect a battle getting a refund, if you get one at all. We canceled two days after purchasing online; needless to say, they hadn't shipped us anything. More than a week later we're still waiting for any meaningful response. All we get are emails that say, "Your refund request has been received and forwarded to the relevant department for action. We will reply to you as soon as possible.". It's a lot of money that they owe us, and it's a massive headache, and major stress that we don't need while we're planning a funeral. Save yourself a nightmare and just buy from japanrailpass.net.

Update: After two weeks they refunded just $2900 of a $3700 purchase. They just decided to keep $800 because they can. STAY AWAY!

Tip: Book In Advance - They State You Can Book Your Pass and Have it Delivered to Where You’re Staying, But There Could Be Delays

Tip: book your pass in advance and be sure to have it in your hands before traveling to Japan. I was told that I could book my pass last minute, and I would receive it within 96 hours at the place I was staying at with no issues at all. I received a confirmation email that I would get it 3 days after I placed my order, so I made arrangements to travel within Japan and book tours in cities outside of where I was staying based on that confirmation. However, the pass did not arrive on time. It ended up arriving the next day. Additionally, JR Rail Pass never informed me that I had to be at the location I was staying at to receive it, so the driver left a note saying “I missed the delivery,” and therefore I had to wait even longer at my accommodation because they give you a window, not a specific time (I could have been sightseeing in the city I was staying at, but instead, I was waiting around). This threw off my entire itinerary, and I lost valuable time as well as money because of it. I had to make many phone calls and send emails to both JR Rail Pass and FedEx in order to finally get my pass. I asked JR Rail pass if they could compensate just the shipping since they didn’t inform me I had to be at my place of residence and because of the delay, but they refused. I ended up not being able to get the most out of my pass and would have saved money if I just booked all my train tickets in Japan, not through this company.

In response to JR Rail’s response:
That is not entirely accurate. Having your pass delivered to your accommodation in Japan is not one of the most convenient ways to obtain your pass. As noted above, there were significant delays as well as several gaps in communication.

SCAM Alert!

SCAM Alert. They send you the package with UPS. You do not receive any information about when and where to pick up your parcel if you (mysteriously) missed it.
Afterwards they will ask you to pay additional shipping fees of around 50€ or request refund which you loose 15%(!!!!!) of your original payment.
Stay away from this site. There are better and more reliable websites available!

If I could give a zero review I would

Stay clear of this company. There are many authorised dealers for the Japan Rail Pass. Choose one that provides an electronic voucher to exchange, NOT A PAPER ONE!!! This is fraught with danger and this company failed for us - twice. Our holiday started with unnecessary stress trying to retrieve this pass which did not arrive in time. We paid for express post. The courier company they used lost the parcel for five days then sent it to the opposite side of the country. As a result we didn't receive it before we left for Japan. Then they sent it again to Japan, and it failed to arrive again in time. We ended up not being able to use two of the rail passes they sent us due to failures of delivery. We met a couple on our journey that told us they chose a japan rail pass authorised dealer that provided an electronic version, and they had no problems whatsoever. Because it did not rely on delivery they received the electronic voucher instantly and they were on their way. It is absurd to supply a paper voucher in this day and age. Additionally, this company's refund policy is pathetic. Firstly, it was only a fluke I sent a request for a refund while still on my holiday. They demand that the request has to be within 15 days otherwise they instantly deny the refund. This is so wrong and an obvious ploy to avoid giving people refunds. Secondly, they tried to deny the refund with an unreasonable request that we had to have the two passes together in a photo ripped up as proof of being destroyed - even though they knew they were sent to two different countries!! Totally unreasonable. Thirdly, they said we would get our refund in 6 months time then if we couldn't present both. They are such a bad company to deal with - from order through to refund. I had to fight them every step of the way to get our money, and even then they only gave us 85% back even though we paid for insurance. Not only did we have this horrible, stressful, pathetic experience with completely poor customer service, but it cost us $200 for the pleasure. :( It is so wrong. They kept $200 for the delivery cost - which is absurd because we paid for express and didn't get this - for their supposed handling fee - this entire experience was handled so badly by them - and the insurance cost. This was so wrong. It wasn't just us changing our mind. They failed - again and again and did not provide the product to successfully use. Not one single thing was positive with dealing with this company. We should have a full 100% refund. They did not deserve a cent. They refused - even though we paid for insurance. Be warned. Stay clear of this company. Use a company that provides an electronic voucher and are actually operating in the 21st century.

No Service, No response - AVOID. NO full REFUND

We purchased JRail pass stating collection point address as JR Pass Train station, we received email stating "We regret to inform you that there are no collection points at the airports or at the train stations" whereas legitimate JR Passes can be collected there. We called the phone number mentioned in the website jrailpass.com no response. We sent email asking for refund if we cannot collect at Train stations but are not getting any reply. We emailed both to info@jrailpass and refund@jrailpass and still waiting for response. We request the response and refund immediate. This is making our holidays painful.

SCAM - not official vendor

SCAM! They say the pass will reach you in 24-48h and it’s been already more than 6 days. We had to leave for our trip to japan and they still havent answered about a refund!!!!

Edit* They said that it’s not their fault the package got to the address only after 8 days, and then after one month gave us 85% refund of the cost of the pass, and never refunded the cost of delivery. We are short or more than 200€ so DO NOT BUY FROM THIS VENDOR. The official site is Japanrailpass.net, this one is not official (dont use Japanrailpass.com)

Scam n fraud

Same as other people, I didn't realize that it is not official Japan railway website. I bought the ticket n it supposed to issue the tickets 3 months before arrival but I realize that there is no stating of such information on my invoice. Email to company but they only reply after 1 days. They claimed that they will refund me. Crossed my fingers and hopefully they will honor the promise
